The Chinese characters have the function of recording the words. Foreign learners who study Chinese should know there are three basic conditions of Chinese characters record words. Some monosyllabic Chinese words are recorded by a single character like 人, 心, 手, 口, 山, 水, etc. When you study Chinese, you should know it was obvious in ancient China so that the language idea of regarding characters as words was produced. In this condition, the characters and words are combined together in psychology.

Another condition that the foreign students who learn in Chinese courses in China should know is that one character records one morpheme does not belong to word. The words like 谦, 驰, 敏 and 兴 appear as independent words and carry certain meanings. But they should be used as words by combining with other morphemes. Besides, foreigners who study Chinese may hear that a single character can record a syllable without meaning. If the character of the word 沙发exists independently, there is no specific meaning. Therefore, some words can be written in another form like 劈啪and 噼啪.
