The associated structure is composed of two or more coordinate components. During the process when you study Chinese at school, the teachers may tell you the internal structures of the associated structure are similar, including the syllables and parts of speech. For instance, in the associated structure 笔墨纸砚, learners who study Chinese can see the four coordinate components are all nouns and monosyllabic. The meanings of the components are usually the similar or opposite or relative. Therefore, we can use some words’ meanings to guess the meanings.

Accordingly, it is important for teachers in Chinese language courses to recognize the associated structure. And the most important is to find out the symbols of the forms. First of all, the coordinate components are usually connected with functional words like 和 and 又…又…. If you pay enough attention when you study Chinese, you may find the punctuation mark in this structure is mostly the slightly-pause mark. For example, 他经过初赛、复赛、决赛,终于得了第一名.
